YCS Youth Take on Public Health Beyond the Pandemic

Meet
YCS Youth Peer Leaders Alec & Rose |
| We know all too well that the COVID pandemic continues to challenge our lives.
Our opportunity is extraordinary: to help students see complexity, bolster community connections, improve public health, foster friendships – and ultimately, improve our world through service. |
Alec, a senior at East Palo Alto Academy and Rose, a junior at Notre Dame High School in San Jose have been part of the YCS Youth response to the COVID pandemic for over two years, together clocking over 500 service hours! A financial gift from you today helps YCS continue to engage students across communities to address our most urgent challenges. At YCS, our mission is to elevate youth voice to raise community connection and equity through service.

Alec and Rose, YCS Youth Peer Leaders, along with over 80 other local high school students have created and led a variety of outreach and wrap-around services in English, Spanish and Tongan at over 110 community-based vaccine clinics, resulting in over 8,200 vaccinations. YCS youth have partnered with community organizations, elected officials, and medical and academic institutions to engage in high-touch, door-to-door outreach to offer culturally-appropriate, respectful, trusting dialogue in East Palo Alto, Belle Haven and surrounding neighborhoods to increase equitable access to COVID-19 Vaccines.
Expanding YCS Public Health Service Programs
As YCS continues to address health care needs in our community, during our Summer of Service (SOS) 2023, our Public Health track students engaged with community leaders to develop a series of videos to raise awareness about the importance of health insurance coverage.
These public service announcement videos were shared with over 150 community members during the design phase. 90% of those surveyed said that they are likely to recommend this video and 80% stated they learned something new from the video. Click here to see the rest of the videos (Spanish options available) in this series and fill-out our survey. |

“This program is important to me because I've learned so much about health coverage, where to look for when I need to get any kind of vaccine for free, or things that may help me towards health. Not only do I feel more confident in knowing what to do/expect when doing anything health related, I know what to do and what the signs are to get help if I'm feeling sick or anything! I've made great connections with peers and guests who have visited us during the pandemic and when we're helping the people in farmers markets and other places!! Thank you YCS and I look forward to working with y'all ONE MORE YEAR”
- Alec, YCS Peer Leader

What Community Leaders Say About YCS |
"The vaccine clinics, the canvasing, the neighborhoods, the thousands of doors the youth have knocked on, passing out information, addressing people's concerns and questions, getting those folks to the clinic. That story in itself is just amazing. All the while this is also developing the youth, it's such a win-win. YCS is doing something for the community, but they're also impacting young people. The Youth learn about mobilization, communication skills, logistics, and putting vaccine clinics together takes a lot, there are a lot of moving parts there. And the youth get exposure to all that. I think YCS is a real pearl in the community."
– Lisa M. Tealer, Executive Director,
Bay Area Community Health Advisory Council (BACHAC)
Co-Lead, Umoja Health, San Mateo County |
